Monoaminergic dysfunction has been implicated in serious mental disorders including psychosis, addiction and affective disorders. We explain the concept of serious mental disorders and discuss dimensional approaches. Monoaminergic correlates of Pavlovian conditioning, Pavlovian-to-Instrumental Transfer as well as goal directed versus habitual decision making will then be compared in major mental disorders. Finally, we Highlight findings on the effect of stress exposure on dopaminergic and serotonergic neurotransmission.
